When Chloe Wang joined SCOR’s Life and Health team in China, she was one of two employees, helping to build the business from the ground up. Nearly 15 years later, she has held almost every role aside from medical underwriter and now oversees all of SCOR’s L&H business in APAC.

Having grown up in China and studied in Canada, she began her career in consulting before transitioning to the life insurance sector. When she returned to China, she had the opportunity to join a reinsurance company, where she found the perfect blend of technical work and strategic conversations, and eventually moved to SCOR to help establish the Life and Health business locally.

“The role of the reinsurer is more than just capacity provider,” she says. “I see reinsurance as a combination of life insurance and consulting, because we take on risks similar to an insurance company, but at the same time what we’re really offering our clients is expertise.”

Chloe's current role at SCOR is multifaceted and expansive. She is the Head of Life and Health for APAC, overseeing eight markets – Mainland China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Southeast Asia, India, Japan, Korea, and Australia/New Zealand (ANZ) – as well as technical accounting, data validation, experience analysis, and in-force management. Additionally, she serves as the CEO of SCOR China and the Legal Representative for SCOR China.

“From a career perspective there have been a lot of changes for me personally over the last couple years, but it’s given me a lot of opportunities to learn and to expand my knowledge,” Chloe says. “I surround myself with good people – people who are extremely smart, who work hard and are diligent, and who just want to do the right thing and have a positive impact. I think as a leader that’s very important.”

Chloe's vision for SCOR in APAC is centered on building a strong team of future leaders with not only the technical knowledge but also the integrity, motivation, curiosity, resilience, and strategic mindset needed to succeed. She believes in fostering synergies and connections among different markets, ensuring that her teams can learn from each other and work collaboratively.

This is particularly important at a time when changing demographics and growing trends are creating new opportunities – and challenges – for the Life and Health reinsurance sector.

Chloe identifies digitalization as one of the key trends impacting APAC and points to SCOR’s way of operating as a clear advantage in harnessing this opportunity. By enabling close collaboration among global and local teams, SCOR is able to offer a global perspective and expertise while providing clients with solutions tailored to address local needs.

She gives the example that some markets in APAC rely on paper-based processes, while others have completely transitioned to online and digital systems. By working collaboratively, teams in more digitalized countries can offer insights about their experience supporting clients through their own digital transition, while local teams can adapt solutions originally developed for another market to fully meet their clients’ needs. Chloe also emphasizes that this wave of digitalization brings the potential of new technologies, such as AI, to streamline operations, reduce costs, and offer new types of solutions to clients.

Meanwhile, she says, changing demographics are driving demand for different types of protection across APAC. While some countries are facing rapidly aging populations, others are seeing their young majority come of age and join the workforce. Here, again, she works proactively with her teams to identify the best approach in connecting each market with appropriate solutions.

“I believe good leaders build good culture,” she says. “I always tell my team that the only thing I know is that I don't know everything. That's why I work closely with my team so they can help me to complement my view, while at the same time I share my view with them. Over time we all grow. And I think leaders should have the courage to hire people that they think are – or have the potential to be – better than them, stronger or smarter. Having that self-awareness is important and leaves room for everyone to improve, which benefits us as individuals, as a team, and as a company.”
