At SCOR, we are deeply committed to supporting projects that foster a sustainable and resilient future. A prime example is the Edwards Sanborn Solar and Battery Storage Project in Kern County, California, developed by renewable energy company Terra-Gen and insured by SCOR. Our collaboration with Terra-Gen on this facility, one of the largest solar-plus-storage projects in North America, fully reflects our determination to support the energy transition.
Construction of the Edwards Sanborn solar facility, which spans over 4,600 acres, began in 2020. Its initial phases became operational throughout 2022 and 2023, and in 2024, the facility was recognized with the Presidential Federal Sustainability Award for its significant contribution to advancing carbon-free electricity. The project currently boasts a solar energy capacity of 807 megawatts, and a battery storage capacity exceeding three gigawatt hours. This enables the facility to provide up to 1,300 MW of power to the grid, significantly bolstering California's renewable energy infrastructure. Future phases of the project are set to interconnect an additional 2,000 MW of solar and energy storage to the California Independent System Operator (CAISO) grid. Once complete, the entire Edwards Sanborn franchise will contribute up to 3.35 gigawatts of solar storage to the grid, further cementing its role as a cornerstone of sustainable energy production in the region.
The Edwards Sanborn solar and battery storage project exemplifies the potential of large-scale renewable energy initiatives. As Terra-Gen continues to develop and expand the facility, it will support California's clean energy goals and set a precedent for future renewable energy projects across the globe. With the backing of SCOR, this project is well-positioned to make a lasting impact on the renewable energy landscape.
SCOR’s involvement in this major project underscores our dedication to promoting renewable energy. By combining the Art & Science of Risk to protect societies and foster resilience, SCOR is contributing to a better, more sustainable future for all.
