A journey toward lasting behavioral change: building a healthy lifestyle using behavioral science

A journey toward lasting behavioral change

Though most of us are well aware of the positive effects of building a healthy lifestyle, it can be a very difficult thing to achieve and maintain in the long term.

Though most of us are well aware of the positive effects of building a healthy lifestyle, it can be a very difficult thing to achieve and maintain in the long term.

From an insurer’s perspective, helping policyholders to establish and maintain a healthy lifestyle offers an opportunity to mitigate morbidity and mortality risks.

Building on this alignment of interest between insurers and their customers, a new in-depth Life & Health article identifies some of the key processes and factors involved in forming and maintaining healthy behaviors, and looks at how SCOR is leveraging behavioral science to pinpoint the ingredients for successful healthy lifestyle programs.

Written by SCOR’s Olivier Cabrignac, Head of Innovation for Western Europe and Latin America, and Sven Ebert, Head of Product Development, Biological Age Model, with the support of the Behavioral Science team, the article is split into three sections – broadly “why”, “how” and “what”.

It looks first at the motivation process, because understanding the “why” is the first step toward successful behavioral change. Next, it examines the “how” of adopting a new behavior, and the importance of setting achievable goals. Finally, it considers the “what”: the ingredients for a successful health program.

Supporting healthy living is not just about raising awareness or simply having a strong will; it must follow a thoughtfully and sensibly planned process that leads to lasting behavioral changes. Most human behaviors are sensitive to a wide range of factors and are deeply ingrained in people's minds, making behavioral change very difficult. This is where behavioral science can step in and help people make effective and sustainable lifestyle changes.”
